EXERCISE should be a key part of any healthy lifestyle.
And there is no time like summer to make the most of any of the region's great coastline, parks or sporting facilities. There are now lifeguard patrols across most of the region's beaches and ocean baths.Council-run swimming centres both indoor and outdoor are all now open and are also a great place to spend time with the kids during the holidays.Sporting teams are not just for the kids, either. There are dozens of different associations from basketball to extreme frisbee that provide a means for people to have fun, stay active and socialise, regardless of age.In addition to this, there are a number of health clubs and gyms right across Newcastle and the Hunter that not only provide a convenient place to exercise come rain, hail or shine, but can tailor fitness regimes to suit almost any health requirements.Because the unfortunate reality of modern-day living is that many people do not exercise as much as they should. The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study in 2000 showed that obesity rates had increased to 68 per cent for males, and 53 per cent for females.Inadequate exercise is a major contributor to these figures, which can have life-long health repercussions. The national activity guidelines suggest everyone should do moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, five times a week.Nor do the slim get a reprieve.A Choice magazine health study reports that those who are "fat and fit" are actually in a better position health-wise than those who don't exercise at all.But exercise need not be thought of as a chore, it can be fun. The trick is to find what is right for you. Even something as simple as spending time gardening can have health benefits. And all this does not just mean better physical fitness.Exercise releases the body's natural feel-good chemical, endorphins, which helps to promote a sense of health and wellbeing.Which is the perfect way to enjoy summer's sunshine.
